Stage 1 has ended on the Shootout - where to from here???

Howzit all, it has just gonged midnight on Sunday the 5th of July. That means the scoring on the Zigzag / Hurley Sponsor me Shootout portal has concluded.

Ei Curamba, what a first round it was! Over the past few weeks the lead changed hands a number of times, a few candidates made a late, mad, dash up the leader board, others had computer issues at the worse possible time, and as a result dropped a few spots for the lack of loading fresh content ☺! All in all, the clock has sounded and we will now be moving into the second stage of the Shootout.

We will be narrowing the competition down to 10 contestants, by taking the top 8 members on the Leader board (to the right here) and adding two 'promising' wildcard candidates to join them in second stage of voting. This vote will take place on the Zigzag website, via an online poll and select panel decision. It kicks off sharp on Tuesday the 7th and finishes at midnight on Monday the 13th of July.

But how exactly will Zigzag determine the 5 finalists to ‘shoot-it-out’ in front of our video and camera man in the grand finale surf trip be settled, you may ask? Well, the outcome of this ballot will be a 50/50 combination of the 5 candidates with the most public votes (which counts for 50%) and a select panel decision (also counts for 50 %). On Tuesday the 14th of July we will have the results calculated, and shortly thereafter will contact each of the 5 candidates, as well as announce the outcome on the Zigzag website and the Shootout portal.

So here’s the best of luck to the 10 candidates who advance, and condolences to those who narrowly missed out. Meanwhile, life will go on at the Shootout portal. We are setting up a new reward system where members posting the best video and photo each month score a killer prize. So keep working at editing your videos and posting your photos.

Any questions? Please drop them below and I will do my best to comment back.

We also want to announce the final 5 in random order. So the finalists do not know who finished tops. No favoritism going into the trip.

ha, good points! glad it tracks.

also stoked you can't see your progress as the time goes on, that drove me insane, think I was heading for a nervous breakdown! like watching rugby with your team 2 points in the lead but it lasted 3 months! not good for my mentality!!

Tracks IP's and plants cookies E! Tried to make this painless for the public as possible. Thought of asking the public to decide on a top 5 but then some of the public voters will have only seen the top 10 for the first time. So asking them to mull over the list and vote for 1 - ' the best' – candidate will probably have more people participating. The more people participating means you get a fairer reflection of the public opinion. Asking a random dude to rank 5 will be like pulling cat claws. Do not underestimate the apathy of the online community he he! Best of luck to you guys!

goop point 007. I agree on the top 5 vote, it would have been a good idea. by the way, are you not a working man yet? How can you be surfin ebay every day?? huh? huh?

Brandon - on the voting, are you guys tracking IPs so each person can only vote once? I know polldaddy has a function to do that. I think that will also help with the facebook / twitter scene. but I reckon the judges vote will probably even that out any way huh?

(PS goodluck to all the peeps in the top 10, hope the voting goes off like a bomb. I'm going on holiday so will be totally off-line for the remainder and probably the announcement also, so I'm just going to be holding thumbs. Whatever happens I hope the top 5 deserve it and can put on a good show at the final!!)

Shot for clearing that up.. thought the lack of vid might have been a problem there... ebay was cooking today.. no footage but so fun.. stoked.
hey, guess its probably too late now, but was thinking that if people chose who they think should be in the top 5 as opposed to just 1 person then it would make people look at the footage more and less of a question of how many friends on facebook?? I know that you guys vote too so it only counts 50%, but was just an idea so thought I'd put it out there..
peace

It was definitely a snot-n-trane debate on our side to who we would award the wildcard positions to. The choice hinged on a few things. First and most importantly, the position had to go to a ripper – a candidate we felt will not be put to shame if they were to be in the top 5. Secondly, they had to have video proof of their surfing on the portal! Third, the person had to bring significance / worth to the list in some way.

Justin Stevens was one of the eligible candidates for sure. In the end it was unfortunate that so many good surfers on the portal missed out. SOME of the surfers that we had our eye on for a WC spot in no order of preference were: Justin Stevens, Niel Zietsman, Jacque, Andrew Smith, Philip Visagie, Rigard Smit , Grant Beck and N.V.E, The Jackal and Deen Hill. There were one or two others, and although they had great photo submissions they did not have video – sigh.

Agree that Chris Bond is an incredible surfer. But we will have to wait and see who the two lucky wildcards are :).

If I had to give a wildcard to anyone, it would def be Chris Bond. I rate he is by far the best surfer in this contest! I hope he makes it!
