Every Durban surfer has heard of, knows someone or has been directly affected by car theft while in the water. The truth of the matter is an alarming number of vehicles are being stolen on a daily bases. Do you leave your car key in your canopy, lock it in a mate’s car, duck it in the wheel arch, or hide it on the beach somewhere??? Criminals are on to this and its easy pickings for them! They break into canopies or mates cars and drive your car away with the key!! I am a local Durban surfer and owner of a locksmith company, and have been called to assist a few times where failed theft attempts have taken place.
My business specializes in the electronic vehicle transponder keys, and we are now able to supply a SURF KEY. Electronic, coded waterproof key!! You can leave your expensive remote key at home when you go for a surf, paddle with your key on you, and you won’t have to worry if your car is still there or not while you surf.
I am just interested to find out what Durban's surfing community thinksabout this idea and whether there would be an interest in the surf key product? All comments and stories welcome.

This is a great idea.

Get stressed every time I leave my key somewhere.

Especially when surfing at secluded spots. At Scottburgh, it used to be safe leaving your keys with the lifeguards, not any more. About a year or 2 ago, we were running a local contest down there and 3 sets of keys were nicked from under the lifeguards noses and their cabs were just driven out of the parking lot.

i think it's a great idea - usually only more expensive cars have this option.

i would check out which car manufacturers offer this option and the cost - to check whether you can make it cheaper - for those that don't offer the option, contact the dealers directly to see whether you can offer this service to their customers - if i was buying a car and saw a flyer to have this retro-fitted, it would certainly be an option that i would take up !

 good luck...
