I think I deserve it Jurie - ha ha. No jokes! I rate everyone has their points here. The Zag's just is just so SUPER darn stoked to have discovered premium A grade surfing that we knew existed by can now put a face to it! As Kerri said - let the best man - or woman win.

Eita! Now this is a good blog topic. My 2 cents - the top 10 shortlist public vote, along with a judging panel at the end, is going to also go a long way to help make sure that the 5 finalists aren't guys who can't string a turn together but have got the biggest network on Facebook. That said, a sponsorship is also about putting yourself out there, and it's epic to see guys fired up and putting in lank effort to drive their campaign. If i look at the top ten right now, it's pretty damn reflective of the guys who are ripping and working hard to put up footage (especially video, which counts more) and the final votes are going to help iron out any kinks here too. So put up the vids and let the good times roll! Squiji out.

heavy days, but is this becoming a popularity contest? Could we find the next "Mr congeniality" at the hurley shoot out.? hahaha, so much drama.....

Bottom line, keep it tidy, let your surfing do the talking.

yeh I agree, Kerri, I know for a fact that there are alot of riders on here that rip and punt way better than I do, but Im giving it a bash anyways...... Its a cool concept and some hungry crew out there. The format will sort it out and the selectors at the final surf off will choose someone that they think will represent the brand in a positive manner. A good rep/role model in and out of the water and of course that person will have to have the all round package in the surf. Just have fun and surf and try improve, thats what I would like to do.....Laters

i think anyone and everyone should be able to enter and show their stuff without it becoming a dog show with people grovvelling for points... let it be cos you are the best... let the best person win:)

Sheesh this is such an interesting and debatable topic.. think what it comes down to is which side of the fence you sit on. Take Ewald who was sponsored by Quiksilver, done well in SA champs (think represented SA too), for years, but when he did his degree and got into the working world he presumably couldn't make the requirements (competitive) for continuing the contract. But the guy seriously rips, and would be amped to be sponsored.
Then you have the people out there (I guess myself included), who have never had a free wetsuit or two nor clothes packs or photo shoots with top photographers for doing what we love, surfing, and think this is competition is for us.
Then there are the guys who are currently sponsored, but not by contract, and are amped to get in on it because its fun and seems a great opportunity.
But there are other factors too, like getting video footage, and putting it together, and having quality pics, and how many friends you have on facebook to get to look at your page!!
At the end of the day we're all working on the same canvas here and it is an opportunity to show our talent and put it one place, getting like-minded surfers together. At the end of the day Hurley is going to make their choice, so everyone has just got to do their best, and if you think you deserve to be sponsored, then happily compete with people who were or are and show them what you got!
Peace

Sick comment jurie agree with ya,but also with Ewald. I rate he's pretty correct and on the ball.I think any competitions hard competition no matter how young/old or experienced they are.In the end one day you might come up against one of them in a heat and if you beat them now, you most probably gonna have a fair chance of beating them then.

Also agreeing apon how insane this site is becoming. congrats to hurley. For me, always just being on the edge of competition and not really getting up there with the other oh's, this is a great way to get my name up there and even if i dont make it hopefully other brands (checking out this site) will pick up the peices and make surfing alot more easier for me.ha ha.

Peace. check u guys in the water sometime!

hmmm, mixed feelings really. While I agree that it would be nice to "give others a chance" I think the emphasis should be "THE SHOW". Take, for argument sake, shane warren. While I don't know how long it's been since he had a sponsor or whatever, surely if he qualifies he should be able to enter.

Other situations also apply like I know some of the other guys on here had sponsors years ago, myself included, does that mean that we should be excluded or do the past 8 years of the 9 - 5 qualify us to be included in the "underground army"?

Imagine if this event was running a few years ago when Shane Thorne made a "comeback", do you think Hurley would want him in the event or not? Imagine them claiming they had a stake in that!?

that said I understand your comment and it's valid from that point of view. What really exites me is that such an open forum has become so popular. I was sitting on the plane the other day and I heard someone talking about the website. He was sitting in his suit on his way back to JHB from a CapeTown meeting! NOW THAT IS AWESOME!
